I would like to report about holding seminar at milk collection center in Mbarara district and press tour by Embassy of Japan in Uganda and JICA Uganda Office.

1.Seminar in Milk Collection Center

We held 3 seminars at 3 milk collection centers in order to disseminate the intervention package (1. Milking hygiene, 2. Nutrition & reproduction management, 3. Ticks & tick-borne diseases) to farmers other than our cooperative 30 farmers.

Some presentations were given by district extension officers (EX officer). In addition, Dr. Patrick who is an expert of tropical diseases and ticks attended this seminar and gave a special lecture for farmers. Therefore, this seminar became very meaningful and interesting.

Most farmers listened intently to our presentation and we were able to have an active exchange of opinions. Furthermore, project team worked hard as one, so I suppose we became better acquainted through this event.

On the other hand, we have identified issue about Quality Based Milk Payment System. This is a very effective system not only to enhance the attention for milk quality and food safety, but to actually improve the quality of the raw milk. Basically 10% bonus is paid to farmers when they produce high quality milk. We considered all farmers already should know about this system. However, we found out that this information has not reached to farmers and it stopped at leaders in cooperative society. Thus, we have to share this information with stakeholders as soon as possible. We will make clear the fact for farmers who produce high quality milk to get more profit.

2.Press tour by Embassy of Japan in Uganda and JICA Uganda Office

The purpose of the tour was to showcase the diversity of Japanese assistance including technical cooperation, grant aid, volunteers, Japanese NGO’s projects in Western Uganda. More than 16 press officials attended the tour and picked up materials on projects supported by Japan in fields of health, education, agriculture, water & sanitation and income generation. This press tour was conducted from 25th to 27th in July.

In terms of our project, JICA Uganda team and press team visited Ruberwa farm, which is one of our cooperative farmers. This is large-scale and modern farm in Mbarara district. The owner talked about “how collaborating with Safe Milk Promotion Project”. Press team also asked to the farmers with great interest “how this farm developed such like this”.

At final day of this tour, informative meeting was held in Mbarara town. The event was attended by around 100 participants including Ambassador in Japan, Chief representative in JICA Uganda, Ministers in Uganda and each stakeholder. From our project, Dr. William Mwebembezi who is Mbarara district veterinary officer gave a presentation. He has been involved with JICA for long time and has lots of knowledge about it, because he took part in JICA technical cooperative project (Animal husbandry program) from 2007 to 2014. Therefore, he talked about JICA project mixing his experiences in the presentation. (Presstour Presentation Slide

In my personnel opinion, he has committed himself to this press tour in recent days in spite of the fact that he had a cold. I would like to appreciate his great job and am glad that I could work with him.

This press tour was appeared in the internet news page in Uganda.
